First impressions

AI say first impressions are everything. So how do our favorite daytime dramas measure up? For the most part, not very well. Let's take a look at each current opening. We'll start with the worst:

As The World Turns

OK, for such a great, ground-breaking show, the opening credits top my list as the worst. The extended opening is not completely wretched. But then it falls apart when the "As The World Turns" logo pops up. What's with that font? Seriously, it looks like a 9th-grade art student won a contest or something. IN 1989! There is no excuse for something so outdated.... If I were to go by first impression alone, I'd say this show and I could never be bffs.

Guiding light

When you have a good idea, it has to be executed well! This theme song has a lot going for it. I love the shots of the town. It feels like it's taking you inside of it. But then they add in some cheesy shots and that theme song! What is that? It sounds like the score for a Massengill Douche commercial. Change. It. Immediately.

All My Children

This opening is actually pretty decent. Until the end when they insert the amateur floating Polaroid of Susan Lucci ... THEN close with the horrible logo. What is that font? Zapf Chancery? This isn't a 1980 wedding invitation, it's a modern soap opera opening!

General Hospital

I do love how GH starts the theme song during the end of the last opening shot then flows right into it. But the graphics are a bit off and that music can only be compared to Kenny G on crack. Obnoxious high notes for days.

One Life To Live

This makes the top of the list simply because they once (I think it was only once) custom Snoop Dog remix of then credits. It was in honor of his guest spot on the show. I think it's fantastic. They should use it always. On top of that, the graphics aren't bad. It all works for a show that is known for taking risks ....

Days of Our Lives

Days' opening just kind of floats around the middle of my list. It's the only show that has NEVER had a major opening overhaul. I get tradition. I can dig it. But I would love to see some faces in the opening. Ditch the theme song. Keep the hourglass and MacDonald Carey's voice and give us some faces!

The Young & The Restless

This isn't the newest version of the show, but not much has changed. And that's not a bad thing. Days could take a lesson from Y&R. It knew how to stick to tradition while updating it. "Nadia's Theme" is synonymous with soap drama. Just ask Mary J. Blige.

The Bold & The Beautiful

This opening takes top prize in my books. The theme song is timeless. The graphics are modern and cool. We see the faces. We see the character's names AND the actor's real names. A newcomer will know right away that show is based around the fashion industry. It just works. An amazing first impression. I'd definitely be calling B&B the morning after...
